Single or double major at Williams?
I am a sophomore at Williams College with a 3.9 GPA in Econ and am interested in doing ibanking/consulting. I am considering a double major in CS/Stats. I have taken a couple of courses in both CS and Stats and turns out I am good in it but not good enough to get straight As in every future class I take. I think doing a double major might pull my GPA down to 3.65-3.7. Do you think it is worth it to do an Econ+CS/Stats with a 3.7 or have a 3.85-3.9 in Econ?
Don’t double major.
Why?
Higher GPA > Computer Science second major. Unless you're interested in going into tech majoring in CS is a waste of time.
Is it still the case if I want to keep my option for product management open?
No, if that is the case the CS major is worth it and a 3.7 is still good enough for banking imo
3.9 in Econ will get you wherever you want to go in banking, contingent on you networking and subsequently interviewing well. 3.6 might get your resume dinged right away. Don’t double.
Do you have a genuine interest in CS? If yes, then major it in. If you don’t, then don’t, but don’t optimize your life around getting one job. If you really want IB, you’ll make it happen either way.
With how much the world will be changing over the next two decades, I would strongly recommend you pick up the CS/Stats major as well if you can. Try to delay the hardest classes til after you get a summer internship offer.
You break in IB / Consulting with any of those GPAs if that's your goal, but from a signaling perspective graduating with a CS/Stats and the skills that come along with it will serve you really well in the future and keep you flexible for a lot of different roles should you be interested.
