So this is my dilemma
Hello, I'm looking for some help and direction in the Finance world. Ok so here's my story. I went to Quinnipiac University my freshmen year and did alright and my goals were originally law school. Then my father passed suddenly and here begins my streak of awful grdes. I went to community college and did horrible. I went to Quinnipiac again and did horrible. Then to Rutgers and did horrible for anothee semester. I was very depressed, constantly driving home to help my mom, etc. Since then I saw a therapist got my ass back on track getting 3.8s at Rutgers. I love majoring in Econ and have realized Finance is what I wanrt to do. Only problem is I have a 2.6 at QU and will probably finish RU right around a 3.5. Also since my resume looked like crap i was stuck doing a terrible accounting internship at a local hotel that has no clout at all. Anyway I'm just wondering if abyone has any advice for my situation. I want to work my a$$ off and I WILL do this, i just have to figure out how lol. I refuse to let 2 unlucky, crappy years of school dictate my life, but as of right now that's what I feel like is happenong.
I go to school down the road from QU.. small world.
Anyways, why not look for some relevant internships while you are still in school? QU is like Harvard compared to where I go (think of what is in the area near Yale), and even though it is not a target school, you should be able to get something - even in PWM (tons of places in New Haven, and probably the same in Jersey).
There is nothing you can do about your grades now, so focus on the future.. at least you have a reason for your performance, and not that you were too busy partying to attend class. Show that you are serious about finance and beef up your resume with some related experience, even if it is not at a BB.
Thanks for the quick reply, I'm just a little lost on where I could get related experience. I'm without a doubt willing to intern somewhere in the fall and spring, but where should I look that would be good experience?
Depends on what area of finance you want to get into.
At the very least, you should have no problem interning at a money manager - tons around. Look into offices in your area at companies like ML, JPM, etc.. for PWM. I did my first internship in PWM at a small branch of Wachovia Sec. in New Haven, and it was crappy but led me to my current internship at a hedge fund. So sometimes you just have to start off small if you aren't coming from a target.
If I were you, I'd start reaching out to some QU/Rutgers alumni in whatever area you want to go into. I assume both schools will have a decent alumni base in banking. That might be more helpful in landing a relevant internship. If you want to get into investment banking, look into some boutique firms as well.
Check sites like monstertrak.com and efinancialcareers.com for internship listings.
If you can't get into the banking track, look into corporate finance or equity research. They are good places to start in finance and learn about a lot of skills you can translate to banking down the road. Another good place to look at is a Big 4 firm. Deloitte and PwC in particular would be good places, since they have well-established consulting arms that you could eventually work at and get some really quality experience.
Just do the best you can, and be open to opportunities outside banking. F500 CorpDev/CorpFin is a lot of fun, secure pay, and lower cost of living (though less glamorous and lower-paying). Big 4 will work you hard but has great perks and you can get into consulting (similar to banking) through that path. Equity research lets you work on valuation, a key component to an IBD analyst's two years. All three are usually easier to get into than banking and a lot of times you can find internships at these kinds of jobs with (relative) ease.
Thanks for the responses, they are definitely helping.
How is the pay in F500 corporate finance? This is what I was actually looking at doing, but I'm not sure.
And I'm not sure about consulting at a Big 4. I think my resume might be kind of weak for that?
I should also add that I can't seem to find part-time internships for the fall or spring for any of these. Should I just be sending my resume out and cold-calling these places anyway?
Also equity research actually sounds pretty interesting to me, but I can't seem to find internships in that either. Especially oart-time. I mainly looked on MonsterTrak and eFinancialCareers for my whole night.
