socks match your pants when wearing dark pants. with lighter pants (tan/beige) match your socks to your shoes (though ill often wear navy socks with tan pants and brown/cordovan shoes). so if your wearing navy pants, for example, regardless of whether youre wearing black or brown shoes, your socks should be navy. that said, i like to mix it up and throw on more fun colored socks for the hell of it, but typically do that with darker colors (grey, navy) and black shoes. the only time i actually wear black sock, though, is when im wearing a tux.. so not very often. i dont much see a need to owning a black suit that isnt a tux
