Software Engineer To Management Consulting Help (Rising Senior)
Hi all,
I'm a long time reader first time poster.
I'm hoping to receive niche tips and/or constructive discussion on what to do this summer, branding myself and my chances of moving into mbb or a tier 2 firm. My background is below.
- Target School
- Studying Computer Science and Entrepreneurship
- 3.7 GPA
- Two internships (Software Engineer at a large, non FAGN company, Data Analyst at a Unicorn Startup)
- Been a part of 2 startups that have received $90,000 dollars in funding
- Research Assistant for 1.5 years
- Various extracurricular Involvement
The reason for the change is that I enjoy my startup experiences far more than traditional programming. Happy to dive into that if necessary. Any insight beyond "case and point" and "network like crazy" would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks!
I would start looking into tech or TMT consulting companies. Alternatively, implementation consultants like Accenture. Other general things that help with consulting are languages so if you can spend some time learning or improving one.
Thanks! Any thoughts on particular TMT companies? I'm only familar with the ones that get tossed around on here
A couple. Just PMed you.
Dude forget what the other user is talking about, just prep and apply to top shops this upcoming recruiting season. Your resume is an instant shortlist.
You might find the "digital" arms of notable firms (ACN, Deloitte etc) to be interesting spots to throw an app into too.
Thanks I appreciate the feedback honestly really good to hear! I think the digital facet is definitely worthwhile. Candidly, I'm just worried having the software engineering/research would label me and make me seem disingenuous. Idk enough about the perception of programming tho
Consultant hires come from all walks of life - the commonality being they're all smart. You're worrying about a problem that doesn't exist.
I think you don't have a good idea of what you're getting yourself into; working in consulting is nothing like working at a startup. If you want to do something less technical you should try product management, at a startup perhaps?
Its not that I imagine it being like a startup. Startups are like startups. Its rather the skillset I've cultivated (product-market-fit, accounting/finance/monitoring cash flow, team dynamics, etc) are things that are universal to both and that I enjoy.
With that said being a pm is definitely on the radar as well.
Hey man, graduated university this year and had multiple offers from T2 consulting, F500 & government..background is a little similar to yours, I did Electrical Engineering but also majored in Econ at the same time. if you have a good GPA, just polish your social skills and overall appearance. Your resume will stand out & you'll get calls. Work hard on your soft skills, because that's what I find most Eng/CS types lack.
Thanks man good to hear its doable. What'd you end up going with out of curiosity?
