softwares and programming languages used in quant asset management
i haven't been too keen on programming, i can only do excel modelling. but for quantitative roles in AM, what are some of the programming languages and softwares i should start learning? (for an analyst)
Python. Make sure you can use numpy and pandas for data manipulation, maybe learn sklearn as well for regressions. Probably useful to pick up simple algorithms and data structures. Different teams you interview for may use different languages but as long as you show proficiency in one, it's usually good enough since they assume you will be able to pick up other languages in the future. For my interviews, one AM firm asked me to talk through a regression modeling problem with no coding required. Another AM firm gave me a take home assignment to complete, which required pandas and numpy to solve computational problems.
What was the title of this role? Quant researcher , quant analyst, ie.? Also, do you think it would be possible to end up in one of these positions with an Econ major an a minor in data science? Thanks!
They were for quant analyst positions on the investment team doing alpha research. Those were the only two quant analyst positions I interviewed for in quant AM, I applied to a couple more but didn't get interviews. I also networked into talking with someone at another firm's quant equity funds but they weren't hiring. I have a PhD in STEM. I think it really depends on timing since most firms don't have a constant need for many quant analysts on their investments team. I definitely got lucky, but also kept a very close eye on the job boards.
I think a standalone econ major/data science minor is enough from a technical standpoint (assuming decent school, good gpa, good programming skills), but you should have something other than just your education to make you stand out, like projects/internships/publications. Some significant subset of roles will strictly require or prefer a PhD.
