Every factor about you is relevant for the applications. At the end of the day, the schools are interested in a qualified, smart and diverse class. This improves the experience for everyone on campus and is part of each of their selling points.

Every factor may be relevant, but not all factors are weighted equally. Yes, it's a holistic process, but at the top b-schools, work experience, GMAT, undergrad pedigree/major/gpa, are the most important factors driving admissions.

Just looking through some of these profiles, not too surprised that they were dinged at HBS. Some of them had sub-3.6 gpa, which is a huge issue with HBS. Others went to non-target undergrad, did not work at prestigious firms, overrepresented demographic, nothing that really stood out in terms of background. Once again, Poets & Quants engage in hyperbole to attract more readers. That site has become a b-school tabloid.

Don't you love Poets & Quants? I do, although I admit, as someone who who went to HBS and worked at the GSB, and works with prospective applicants all day long, some of the articles make me feel insecure. So don't even bother reading articles like that if they make you crazy. Trying to figure out why someone didn't get in just from their statistics is a fool's game. There's too much we don't know. If you are within the standard deviation of what they are looking for numbers-wise, and you think you have the right mix of leadership and personal qualities, and have global experience, then you have a shot if you manage the application process authentically and well.
