investment banking DIVISION.

The investment banking division (IBD) is generally divided into industry coverage and product coverage groups. Industry coverage groups focus on a specific industry such as healthcare, industrials, or technology, and maintain relationships with corporations within the industry to bring in business for a bank. Product coverage groups focus on financial products, such as mergers and acquisitions, leveraged finance, project finance, asset finance and leasing, structured finance, restructuring, equity, and high-grade debt and generally work and collaborate with industry groups in the more intricate and specialized needs of a client.

Hi, what are some groups under the umbrella of IBD? I only know M&A. Also, what does the "D" stand for in IBD?

D stands for division, but very few people know the real reason why.

"Division" is actually the military designation - all investment banks are secretly fronts for the US Military. An entire bank is designated as an Army - The Army of the Tennessee would be Goldman Sachs (if you refer to Lloyd as Tecumseh Sherman, he'll know what you mean), The Army of Northern Virginia would be Drexel Burnham Lambert, the Army of the James would be Citigroup, and the First United States Army Group would be Lehman. The bank units are really corps, so investment banking is the I Corps, while retail banking would be the Army Corps of Engineers. Under the corps, you obviously have divisions, so IBD is actually the 10th Mountain, S&T is the 82nd Airborne, and PWM is the 11th Armoured Cavalry. Under that, you've got smaller groups, like GS TMT, which is actually better known as the 75th Ranger Regiment; Blackstone M&A, which is really the 1st SFOD-D; and BarCap Nat Res, also known as the 7th Cavalry.

Hopefully that clears up any misconceptions you might have.

I Corps and the Army Corps of Engineers are not the same type of corps, and thus not comparable. Also, the 11th Armored Cav is not a division - its a regiment. Nice try though...
