Somebody help me get out of ops NOW.. please

Ok so I didn't graduate from the UK equivalent of Harvard, and I don't have extensive IB experience or knowledge, however late last year I got a job as an ops analyst (prior to this I was doing some irrelevant crap) and I am now doing trade support - dealing with settlements, a bit of exposure, you know the mundane monotonous rubbish that you all depict it to be. I clearly excel above my colleagues who are wannabe traders and I've been advised I will be promoted to senior analyst later this year but that isn't enough to keep me around.

However I now have a genuine interest in the world of IB and want to remain in this field but ops is so depressing. I'm well aware the transition to FO is not going to happen, I just wondered if anybody had any advice on how I can get out of this awful role and find something more challenging?

I feel for you man, I'm in the same situation working in ops. I'm trying to figure out a way to become a trader for a living but being under capitalized makes it tough. At this point I'm focusing on doing whatever I can to get in to a proprietary trading firm.

Sexy_Like_Enrique Thanks for the advice but I feel I'm too old to go back into education - hitting 27 soon wipes tear.. and Jtom4444 I really wish you the best of luck, you seem to be actually trying to get to FO as opposed to those who just talk about it, I'm just fed up of being surrounded by these arrogant nobodies who think they're some high rollers when in reality they carry out the rubbish duties which the high rollers wouldn't be seen dead doing. The tasks carry out are so basic its soul destroying, and I work alongside an absolute douche who makes so many errors which I have to rectify constantly. I just don't know what my escape route is.

Too old to go back to school? You're joking right? Have you even looked into MBA programs and who attends them? You have options right now: 1) networking heavily and getting lucky and 2) grad school.

I'm sorry but this entire post makes you sound just as clueless, arrogant, and "douchey" as the people you work with. You fit right in.

Under my tutelage, you will grow from boys to men. From men into gladiators. And from gladiators into SWANSONS.

average age of people who attend mba is like 27-28, so you are definitely not old for mba programs.

that being said, i agree that ops is the kiss of death. my cousin works in ops and last time i talked to him, he was so depressed that he was considering suicide. really, I think your best shot at success is going to a top mba program and re-branding yourself.

You seem to have a relative or buddy absolutely everywhere. Either you're completely full of shit or you're the most connected person that can't get a decent job.

Flake - apologies if I sound clueless as I most definitely am, I'm from the UK so I don't think the MBA is as widely recognised here as perhaps it is in the US, which is why I assumed it was probably a course undertaken straight after a university degree, hence why I thought my ship had sailed!

Guess I should definitely consider this option and start fresh.

in US top mba programs only accept people with some years of experience after college... if you can get into a top 10 mba program, you should definitely go.
