Sophomore Resume - Upcoming Sophmore at Northeastern University
Hey guys; long time reader, first time poster. I'll be a Sophomore this upcoming Fall at Northeastern University. Just trying to get a grasp as to the pros/cons of what I have going with my resume here so far.
Obviously, I don't have a ton of Professional Experience, but that'll come in due time.
Thanks in advance!
Get an internship this winter so you can get rid of your high school stuff
What ^ said. By end of first semester, should be all college stuff. Break it into: Education, Professional Experience (if any - if none, make it 'Leadership Experience'), Activities, and Other (which would include Skills, Interests, etc.)
I am in the same boat as Etar. What would you suggest for me to get more professional experience on my resume. What type of internship would you also suggest for me to get this upcoming summer? Is a SA at a bb, a way too big long shot? thank you
Get an internship at a BB private wealth management. SA at BB is impossible based on your resume and class status. They normally recruit juniors, but if you had a lot more experience you could have aimed for a SA position.
Ok thank you. Is there a list of these anywhere that I could start networking?
Thanks for the help. Since I'm at Northeastern I'll be taking no classes and doing a co-op from January-June like is typical for our school. I'm looking into doing myriad things, including but not limited to: Merrill Lynch Risk Finance/Wellington Equity Research and things of that nature.
If I were to work my ass off and try to get an SA position for next summer, I'll have an extra 6 months of valuable experience before it actually starts. Do you think that this is wishful thinking or something that could become a reality if I work damn hard?
slight bump, hopefully someone can inform me as to whether or not my question is sane or not :p
Thanks!!
Hey Etar, I'm a middler at Northeastern U and frankly you won't have the time in your schedule to do a SA position for the summer. Now that your going into your sophmore year, second semester, you'll start the co-op course and begin interviewing with middle of the range companies. Even if you get interviews with Merrill, Goldman, Fidelity, etc... it'll be for back office crap, not anything glamerous. Then again companies don't see sophmores as huge assets to its business model. Once you start co-oping you do it for 6 months from either Jan to mid June or mid July to Dec. The one half of summer you have off will be used to take summer classes that are missed while you are on co-op.
Your best bet is keep your GPA 3.65+ and land one of the interships with a well known company like Goldman or Credit Suisse, even if you're not doing anything exciting there. You just need to do whatever they assign you and do it WELL. Don't fuck around and use the opportunity there to network. It's the easiest way to network with employees of a BB versus cold-calling and emailing. If you say you are an intern looking for some guidance, I'm sure they will offer you some. You just need to reach out (if you're there).
As far as brand recognition. We have none. Northeastern's name will not turn any heads on the street. We have a long road ahead of us you and I, but by no means is it impossible. It takes a bit of dedication, persistance, and some serious fuckin networking.
Best thing you can do is major in something quantative like math/finance, math/econ, econ/stats, etc. Show that you have the ability to think analytically and keep that GPA high. Intern with good companies and network like a ninja. Join good clubs, form solid relationships with a few good professors, and meet with alums.
This formula from any non-target especially Northeastern should set you up for success.
Good luck, let me know if you any questions.
Also, I just read you resume, take off your high school stuff. Companies don't care about high school, what college you are in is a direct result of your high school efforts. Side note, Golden Key is a fluke, they invited me, but I'm not paying 90 bucks to be a part of a scam. Also, can I ask why are you majoring in marketing and finance? Marketing is a different field from finance, two don't really go hand in hand versus finance/accounting, finance/econ, or finance/math. Those 3 I just listed would be the best for finance jobs from NU if that's what your interested in. You don't need to put "experience with pivot tables." That goes along with the fact that you're proficient in excel.
