Sophomore Seeking Advice on Recruiting and Potential Transfer

Hey guys,

I'm currently a sophomore at a semi-target/target in the Midwest (think UMich, ND, or WashU) who is going through the recruiting process for IB. I applied to transfer colleges for Fall 2018 to several schools (like Columbia, Penn, UChicago, Northwestern) more so because I don't enjoy my college that much socially than for recruiting purposes, and will hear back around Late April-Mid May. However, this presents a problem since recruiting is so accelerated this year, and some Bulge bracket banks are already starting 1st round interviews on campus. My GPA is mediocre (3.7ish) and my resume doesn't stand out, so I probably don't have a great shot at top firms right now.

I was thinking that I would focus on middle market firms that have accelerated processes (currently networking more with those than BB's) and hopefully secure an offer before I potentially transfer. However, these MM roles are in Chicago, and I still want to go to BB/EB in NYC after graduation, so if I transfer I will have to work hard to make the jump from Summer Analyst in MM to FT in BB/EB. There is also the sizeable chance that I don't get into any of the colleges I applied to, in which case it will be even harder to lateral. Even though I like the vibe of the MM people I've spoken with a lot more than the BB people, I still want to work at a firm with high deal flow advising more complex transactions with a good mix of M&A/Debt/Equity, and have a potential PE exit to megafunds.

Should I focus more on MM's as I'm doing now, and try to get an offer for one by mid-summer? (There's also the problem that I'm still unsure what I'm doing this summer) I know it's harder to go from MM to BB, but can I do it if I transfer to a better target school? Did anyone go through a similar experience and can give me some advice? Thanks a lot.

As a student in the exact same boat as you I know the concern, but there are a few things to really delve into first before worrying about FT roles. For one there is never a closed door to IB as a FT analyst, regardless of how humble your background is. We see that there are cases of students landing positions at EB/BBs when they went to non-target schools or top 50 schools, you are already in a better place considering you go to umich/Wash U. With that said, I think the best course of action is to go through via the process of recruiting from your campus until you get confirmation back from the schools and even still go through with your application. Even with accelerated recruiting, there are still summer analyst roles that are available for that are due in August and September, so don’t sweat it too much.

Lastly, just focus on what you have control of and try to make sure that everything on your end is done in a timely manner if the colleges don’t get back to you on time.
