Sophomore Summer Internship Boston
I am a current sophomore at Wash U which is a semi-target/target for top consulting firms. I am not a URM and I have a rounded 4.0 GPA. I'm majoring in economics and financial engineering, a program to which I had to apply. Junior year I will recruit for top consulting firms and be flexible to office location but this summer I would love to be home in Boston. I have been applying to some big names across both finance and consulting, but haven't had any luck. I believe that if I got a first round I could impress people, but I'm struggling to get an interview. I don't have any connections and didn't hold any sort of internship last summer as I opted to instead work somewhere more fun and make some money while doing so.
I was hoping to get some advice on where to look and how to go about getting a name brand internship especially at this later stage. No companies recruit from my school through the Boston offices, so I don't have much of an in through that either. I am pretty set on being home, since it'll be expensive to be elsewhere. Thanks for any and all advice!
Getting a name brand internship your Sophomore summer isn't too important for MBB. Got an internship offer from one of the MBB's and a final round interview with another after working for a boutique firm doing ops. My best advice is don't be too hung up on going back home, and get an internship at a boutique consulting firm wherever you can, but there will likely be plenty of opportunities in Boston.
Not sure if your school has a consulting club, but I'd absolutely recommend joining. That's how I found the boutique I worked for last summer. It is a good pipeline. If not, just start looking for boutique (less than 50-75) person firms in Boston, or wherever, and cold emailing and asking to chat with people about their experience/inquire if they have an internship program.
Keep applying to name brand F500 internships, however, if your school has established pipelines. It can never hurt to keep all options open.

I wouldn't rule out the Midwest if the right opportunity is there. Even if your ultimate goal is working in the Northeast, the connections from your sophomore summer internship aren't going to be what gets you an interview with the firm/office of your choice for next summer - your networking and outreach to alums/people at the offices will do this. If there are any boutique strategy or operations firms or name brands in the Midwest that you have a lead at, go for them. They'll likely pay you and that can cover housing/living expenses.
I also know WashU has a team that travels and competes in case study competitions (like multi-day business case comps). This might be something worth looking into, and is something I found helpful to practice and prepare myself for consulting, so long as you guys don't have a consulting club you can join that does engagements.
