Sophomore Summer Internship Inquiry
I couldn't find many answers to this question, so I thought I'd post about it. I'm your average target school sophomore schmuck trying to break into IB with longer term goals in private equity. With recruiting around the corner, I want to start looking for an internship, but I don't really know what I should look for.
Currently, I'm a part-time analyst for a really small sell-side M&A firm (think 5-10 people) - I've got the opportunity to work for them this summer, but the question is, should I pursue something better instead?
I think it's pretty much impossible to get a position at a higher tier bank, so what's the second best option? Private equity firm, bigger boutique IB, etc.
I'm kind of lost right now, so I'd really appreciate any guidance!
Bump
Since you’re at a target, I’d recommend checking some linkedins of upperclassmen who are going into banking and seeing what they did. There are always some really cool opportunities out there with some bigger or mid size firms. If you find something you like, reach out to the person or to the firm.
For example, MSD recruits sophomores for their internship programs. You have missed the non-diversity programs with the big banks like Citi SLP and MS GCM that will take sophs, but there are plenty of really good family offices and PE firms that will take you.
You can also find a decently sized investment bank (maybe 20-30 people) fairly easily at this point, but those opportunities will probably start to dwindle in the next month or so.
Thank you so much for the advice! Out of curiosity, if you were in my case, would you go for the larger investment bank, or the PE firm?
