Sophomore Summer Internship - Local PWM firm or Small FP&A firm?

Looking for some advice from people that have been through recruiting or may know more about these types of situations than I do.

I am currently a sophomore at a non-target and I have become very interested in finance(IB/PE specifically) within the last year. I did not know anything about summer analyst positions until recently and now it is obviously a bit too late. I have to take 6 credits of classes this summer to transfer into a slightly better school but I also want to do an internship on top of the classes to show I am interested in finance in general even though it will not be an IB internship.

My current options are...
1. PWM internship at a local firm(around 400 employees)
Or
2. FP&A type internship at a slightly larger "financial firm" that has around $20bil in AUM.

Do you guys think one of those opportunities would look significantly better on a resume when I am hopefully networking/applying for an IB internship in the Summer of 2019? Would one of these give me a better base skill set that may help with IB in the long run? Thanks!

Any internship looks better than none & will obviously make you a better candidate come recruiting season. If you're asking which internship to take for IB I would suggest the FP&A one, PWM will most likely just make you cold call & is a more markets/sales oriented role.

Thanks for the insight! Yeah I kind of figured that the PWM may just have me working under a partner or portfolio manager sending emails or calling clients. The FP&A is for a decent sized local firm that actually has 6-8 service companies working under it(mortgages, insurance, advising, etc...). So before I rule out the PWM I need to get more information on the FP&A to see what service company I would actually be working under. I think that PWM may look better than interning at a mortgage services company. But I really do not know what recruiters want to see on resumes. Thanks again, appreciate your comment!

This would count as your "sophomore" summer after you transfer out, I would go with the most recognizable name. I know PWM is b.s. work but if it's a UBS/Merrill/MS broker branch the name will stand out on your resume and it will be easy to explain come IB recruiting season junior year when you have to answer the "why IB?" question.

Find out what exactly you'll be doing at the FP&A and if it's actually translatable to finance -- if it's an accounting/reporting/paperwork type of role I wouldn't recommend it.
