Sophomore summer internship lost
Hi everyone,
By now I'm sure you're aware of the situation going on and it's, unfortunately, getting worst. I'm currently a sophomore at a semi-target/target school and landed a corporate development position at a decently known life-science company. Because of everything going on, they had to drop the interns and as recruiting approaches, I'm feeling depressed as I have nothing going for me. I've already emailed 200+ boutiques but nothing yet. Do any of you have recommendations on what I can do? Should I rely on FT recruiting next year? I'm feeling bummed out so anything helps
Thanks!
just recruit for junior summer? why would you need ft recruiting.
Yeah my bad I think that was unclear. I definitely am going to apply but I have no experience for the summer and will have to rely on my freshman internship and clubs (where I don't have much leadership in). I just feel like that isn't going to make me super competitive.
I'm in same boat OP, just keep reaching out to boutiques as assertively as you can. I managed to get a spot at a boutique IB near me, but I'd hurry as a lot of them are cutting down on how many interns they take (from 3 or 2 to 1) and some are cutting pay. Look for hedge funds in your hometown or look for wealth managers (these are usually the easiest to work for as a sophomore). Good luck friend.
Thanks for replying and I'm sorry that happened to you. I'm glad you landed something though. And yeah I am applying to as many as possible but it feels hopeless, especially in March.
Sorry about the situation OP. A huge advantage out of this is you have time left. It’s March, and you are bound to find something eventually. This is also only your sophomore year internship, which means you have time left in undergrad. Keep your head up and you’ll get through it.
Wanted to ask if you’d mind sharing where your internship was or if it was IB/not IB ?
Yeah it sucks but like you said, I still have time and I do live in a city so I can try to snag some yearly internships to make up for it. My internship was corporate development role at a pharmaceutical company.
The whole point of the sophomore summer is to pad your resume by "Incoming XXX" for recruiting. Its important.
How important is it?
How big was the intern program / do you have any idea how many interns got cut? I’m curious about what their cancellation message looked like (boilerplate or more personal?). If you built any solid connections during the recruiting process, consider asking them for some leads or contacts in town who might have openings. Sorry to hear this.
I didn't get to find out how many interns were gonna be with me but it couldn't be more than five (at the location we were). Because the program was small, the HR and one of the higherups called to apologize and say that they won't be taking interns this year. I took your advice and ran with some of his contacts to other pharmaceutical companies looking for interns but now I'm just playing the waiting game. Thanks replying!
