First off Monty, you should know how much of an asset you have been to the WSO community. I was thinking of leaving WSO for good due to the high traffic of trolls a few months back but am glad a stuck around to learn what good has come from the forums. The Energy Trading Group is a great idea for the WSO community, so here are a few suggestions I have to share… take them with a grain.

I do like the Q&A format going on right now, it is most helpful. However, I would suggest going beyond the realms of Q&A or else the Energy Trading Group will turn into the Energy Trading FAQ. There are 50 or so members (which is quite small because this group is private). So, it’s important that there be some frequent user activity and contribution or else the group will die out and serve no purpose beyond that of a standstill FAQ. Believe me, I’ve been a veteran user of various motorsport forums (e.g. Formula One, LMS, WRC, MotoGP, etc.) over the years and can attest to the importance of frequent user activity and contribution. Monty, perhaps you could compile an energy related FAQ within the group similar to what WSO has on the main page.

Going forward, may I suggest some sort of weekly review or wrap-up of the past events pertaining to the energy sector? This could generate some discussion and exchange of thoughts, ideas, or additional questions. Weekly news updates were always important in the winter months of the motorsport forums in order to keep user interest up since the racing season takes a break from about November to March. Monty, I don’t know how you feel about facilitating a weekly update; could any other member of the group with experience in the energy sector take the reins on this one?

And a suggestion to all members of the group; while Q&A is very helpful and important there can be a redundancy of asking questions over and over again (and I fall victim of this one) without additional content in other areas of discussion. It also might give Monty a break from answering some of our more mundane and common questions (sorry Monty, sometimes I forget about the Search function too) and open up a new forum of dialogue. So, to all group members, in addition to Q&A type questions I would suggest posting forum topics with content/news that encourages discussion of the energy industry and everything that surrounds it.

Monty, if I overstepped any bounds on my suggestions feel free to set me straight. You run the show here, and I’m not 100% on what direction you want the group headed. I only speak on my experience from other arenas of forum discussion on what has worked there… not here. I’m just here to learn and offer what little contribution I can.

Cheers

i think part of the q&a most likely stems from the fact that energy trading isnt something that is as highly pushed as equities or fixed income or hte like and thus a lot of people are very unaware of it and so since it is a new group we have a lot of people looking to learn a bit -- and until we learn a bit its hard to have that much discourse :)

Touché. Well put.

Some things in energy are so specific and market based that not sure how a weekly rap up will really help. It is similar to trading rates or exotic options, not like the media covers this stuff on front page info, it took John Arnold several billions before anyone asked how he makes $$$.

So not sure how a weekly wrap about how PJM power traded or why AECO basis is so dunce or why Oct-Jan just got crushed would make much sense to anyone. It would mostly sound like gibberish and again not like this stuff is posted anywhere unless you have an expensive ass platts account.

I think monty`s purpose of this group is to get more people into the energy game, and thinking about energy. Q&A is a good place to start since it gets people thinking.

I didn't want to convey that I was suggesting that Q&A was a poor format to use. I hope that's not how it was taken; apologies if so.

I am very interested to see Monty's view of where he wants the board to go. It sounds like he's busy for the time being. Hopefully he'll return to this thread and offer some thoughts.

this board is for you.. each and every one of you.. i will offer what you guys want to see... i am open to any ideas and also if anyone wants to try their hand on them... I attend weekly meetings on the region i trade and hardly know what they are AND I TRADE THE REGION.. so i am 100% you wont either...

lets think of somehting that maybe monthly I can update.. i am open to ideas
