Sorry but we might have a more Jr position

So I interviewed for a position as an experienced Associate at a BB. I thought I did well in the process with all of the MDs seeming to have taken a liking to me with the exception of one who seemed unimpressed by my non-target background. I do not have IBD experience but have plenty of corp. finance/accounting experience.
I heard back from the HR contact and was told that they went with someone with experience in the industry. I was deflated, but I understood.

Then the HR contact told me that they would be willing to bring me back for a 1st year Assoc. position if I was interested. My question is why would I be offered another round of interviews if I met all of the MDs already? If i was close to getting this experienced position like HR told me, why not just make me an offer and move from there? Why would I have to go back in and meet more people who are junior to those I already met?

I can't comment on your situation, but I don't get why you have an issue with interviewing again.

Two options: 1. If you don't want to be a first year Associate, turn them down 2. If you want the position, slap on a smile and charm your interviewers again.

It's not that I have an issue going further into the process. I agreed to continue and already have an interview lined up. I'm just trying to gauge how they really feel about me. I asked for constructive criticism from HR but they made it seem as if my lack of experience was the only thing that held me back. Does this invite to go through the process again mean that isn't true? Or is this standard procedure?
