Special situation as a potential intern...

Hey guys, I am on track to start a PE internship this summer as a Junior however I was recently involved in a sports related injury and have been given the option to take a gap semester to recover. Unfortunately, if I do this I won't be able to return to campus until the Spring of 2019 which will mean I will have another summer where I am an "intern" before graduating.

My question is:: if I take this time off can I inform groups that I have another year as an "intern" and recruit into their summer analyst class? I am fine with where I am but there are two groups where I would love to work more.

Does this ever happen to people? Would top PE/IB shops be open to this?

Or is this a bad look? Any advice would be huge as I'mw weighing the options now
