Speeding Ticket Thrown Out Because Sign Was Too Hard To Read

In Seattle, a driver was caught speeding 28 mph in a 20 mph zone and fined for $234. However, he appealed it, and the Judge decided to throw the ticket out.

The Judge agreed that the sign was misleading and contained too many words because the 20 mph limit applies “WHEN CHILDREN ARE PRESENT” “OR WHEN FLASHING.” National standards state only one smaller sign should be used so drivers can react faster.

The driver argued he did not see any children present and only saw the flashing when it was too late to react, since there were too many words on the sign to read. Many also believe these signs are ploys to make people pay fines unintentionally.

  • Do you think throwing out the speeding ticket was right? Have you ever encountered misleading/wordy traffic signs?
  • Do you think some traffic signs are designed to mess you up in order to make people pay fines?
