Fast and Fidicuary

The English dubbed version is so cringe. The voice acting just isn't right. The original version is great tho. I'm happy Netflix finally put out something this original

Really? I thought the English dubbed version was one of the better “conversions” for foreign shows in recent memory..

ive seen some atrocious shows where mouths are moving but no audio, or audio before the mouth moves, etc

Yeah bro the Engrish dubs super aite. You go try to lyp sync Engrish words to Korean mouth movements. Them boys talk triangles you don't even know

heister: Look at all these wannabe richies hating on an expensive salad. https://arthuxtable.com/

Dubs in general suck. Only real exception imo are animes Cowboy Bebop and maybe Naruto because of the nostalgia factor. Oh and the old Godzilla movies.

Honestly one of the best shows I've ever watched personally. I don't watch much TV at all and I've tried and it's very hard for me to get into something. I hate shows like the Office, It's always sunny, etc. for some reason. But this was different. I can't stop thinking about it and want more or something similar at least to fill the void. Maybe I have a thing for these Korean type movies considering I though Parasite was amazing also?

Korean shows are next-level writing and production compared to the usual Netflix garbo, imo

Controversial

I thought it sucked. I had high hopes but it was just another reminder that Netflix is all about poorly scripted quantity over quality suited for pre-teen audiences. Specific examples include tropes like the cop clinging to the underside of the car, the girl crawling through the air ducts (that would be loud as fuck and she would likely fatally cut herself), the evil high-tech lair on a mysterious island, the feel good "team" comradery in episode 3 were all just extremely cringe cliches and demonstrate the cheap writing behind it. Oh, and I would never have guessed that the 3 main characters would be the 3 to make it to the last round, shocking! The only reason critics are obsessing over this is the anti-capitalist messaging that is spoonfed to the audience.

"Look at me I'm so much smarter than everyone!" There's always that guy. Acting like you're so stone cold that no point in the show affected you emotionally in any way then going on to squeeze in some weird political-angle in that last sentence there that no one cares about. The marble episode was personally one of best hours of television I've watched in my life. Never get emotional, but that one definitely got me. Guess that makes me an idiot with bad taste then huh?

I skipped through all the emotional scenes including all the key moments from the marble episode. Literally so cliche.

I wouldn't say it makes you an idiot. If that truly was one of "the best hours of television" you've seen, then you are either someone that enjoys cheap thrills and cliches, poor dialogue, and mediocre scripting, or you have not seen any other television shows.

Well-produced garbage. Cheap "Kaiji" ripoff, without all the actually smart plays. Getting nihilism shoved in your face every minute is highly annoying and it was not even in a way that drives you forward, like in "Kaiji". As said above, the cameraderie was all for show, of course the Christian character is a massive hypocrite that gets mocked, every smart or knowledgeable player gets hindered (like the glass maker) or turns to cruel trickery such as Sang-woo, the anti-capitalist message is as bland as it gets, and so on. In essence, Squid Game is really pretty and tugs on your heart strings. But it is not a smart or insightful or uplifting show, just another yawnfest Battle Royale.

I like your response. I heard about Squid Game a week ago and looked at the trailer. It's clear that it's not meant to uplift, I actually felt uneasy and kind of gross watching just the trailer. It is clearly meant to show and appeal to humanity's darker and more base instincts. Not to mention the nihilism stuff like you said. It looks like it inspires an us vs them, kill or be killed, antagonistic way of looking at the world. Just not the type of thing I'm interested in consuming anymore. Ever notice how most of the popular shows do that and inspire negative feelings like anger, fear, disgust, dread? It feels like an agenda to me. Fuck all that, people's best path forward is to put less energy into that stuff and more towards lighter things that show compassion, love, trust, etc.

I watched a little bit - maybe 1-2 hours. I didn’t find the plot incredibly compelling.

Haven't seen the show but seeing as it's now been mentioned across several forums I use I guess I'll have to sit down and watch it to be able to contribute.

People play games and get killed if they lose.

Enjoyed the large variety of different personalities and the interactions between those different characters throughout the show. Really enjoyed episodes 1-5ish then I found it slowed down a bit. Didn't really enjoy the marble episode as much as others for 2 main reasons. I thought the game itself was a bit lame, and being dragged out for a whole episode was not fun for me personally. Secondly, the girl who sacrificed herself did not particularly resonate with me. I just thought she was a bit of an empty character who I think from memory was introduced the episode before and I just had no real connection built up with her. Another letdown were the VIPs. They were on screen for far too long considering they didn't really do much and had dreadful lines. Finally, I didn't really understand why the frontman was there considering he had previously won the tournament? But I guess that will be revealed in Season 2.

I also just finished watching Alice in Borderland which is similar to Squid Game in terms of plot. Less in terms of character personalities but the games are more interesting/violent and has a lot more twists. Recommend checking it out if you have spare time.

Why are we supposed to feel any empathy for these people?  They saw over a hundred people get shot by snipers, left the game, and willingly went back knowing they'd play more and more lethal games.

I know the point is capitalism=bad, specifically the South Korean variant, but come on it's not worse than a 399 in 400 something chance of dying
