SS ER to "Boutique" AM

I am currently working in sell-side equity research (~2 yoe) and I am interested in moving to a long-only. I understand the best path for a large fund like Fidelity or Wellington would be to get an MBA then go through OCR, but what about a "boutique" asset manager like Ruane, Cunniff & Goldfarb? Is it common for MBA students (thinking HBS, Wharton, CBS value investing) to interview at such funds, or is it purely luck and depends on when a seat opens up? What do you think would be the best path to such a fund out of sell-side research? Thanks!
