Yes, this is a very reasonable switch. I would even say that if you network and have a good relationship with your team, you could move to IBD as a third year analyst and potentially become an IBD associate without an MBA.

Very difficult because the recruiting pipeline at BBs is very rigid. Unless you network your ass off and are available at the right time (I.e, off-cycle when they really need someone - rare, or on-cycle with someone that basically slots you in with an associate class starting).
Exception is if you're on a desk that wall-crosses often and you are working with bankers often (I.e., syndicate in equity or corporate debt). Those moves are much more common (and honestly take away slots from the other guys, e.g., an FX trader trying to make the same move).
If you get an MBA though you'll be golden considering that you'll have big bank experience already (BBs like associate candidates who have worked at a BB in different roles).
Agree. I think this will be difficult at a BB but it is definitely possible if you go from BB to MM. Otherwise, an MB would be the best route.

This is a topic I have been thinking a lot about and would really appreciate some input from you guys.
Is it normal to work in another division such as S&T or AM and then get your MBA in order to pivot into an IB role. Or is this very difficult considering firms won't even look at you without previous IB experience? Would you guys recommend MBA or internal transfer for breaking into IB? Thanks guys.
