S&T Fixed Income To Commodities ?
I am passionate about commodities and would really like to make a career out of it. I am currently an intern in S&T Fixed Income. Is this an experience that I can value ?
Is it easy to go from S&T Fixed Income internship to a full time offer in commodities ? (Traf, mercuria, LDC, Macquarie…)
Confirmed guy sees talk about new supercycle and thinks he will be hitting massive bonuses
Would say its the same difficulty as switching to banking solely due to the less spots available.
Thank you for your answer.
Looking at your profile, I saw that you are/was a physical energy trader.
Do you have any resources (books, podcasts, must-have skills) that could be useful to me?
Energy Trading and Investing book. HC insider podcast. Energy Transition podcast. Digital Wildcatters just had John A podcast. Financial Sense Newshour / Macro Voices (be selective both lean libertian and inflation will kill us).
Read “World for sale”, read “king of oil”. Petronerds podcast. AEGIS hedging site.
This is interesting. I was a bond guy before switching to commodities. Why commodities?
For your internship placement, how did HR place you on fixed income? Did you not make your interest clear?
Many thanks for your answers.
I particularly like the multidisciplinary aspect of the job, mixing finance, international trade and economics. After having exchanged on LinkedIn with physical traders on the job and the qualities that it is necessary to have I am convinced that it is a career that I will make.
Very good question regarding inter ship placement.
I won't go into details but in my country (Europe) the BB's have almost fired all the commo services. There are only opportunities in trade finance + due to the taxation of the country there are almost no opportunities here (only agri). Being interested in trading metals rather than agriproducts Idk if I should have persisted in having an opportunity in agri and then switched to metals.
I went from BB S&T SA to a trade house in the same league you’re talking about FT. For junior level roles your prior experience should be good enough to get an interview, but even the largest firms don’t hire much junior trading talent if at all, most times you’ll have to start out in a support role for years before you can make the jump to trader if you’re lucky. If you’re really passionate about commodities and are willing to settle for working for a firm outside of just the large trade houses, you should be able to make the switch if you’re persistent enough.
Thank you for your insights.
Do you have any resources to recommend for preparing for itw?
Trafigura has a primer called “the economics of commodity trading firms” or something like that. You can download a pdf if you google it. That will have you covered in terms of interview prep. Other than that just keep up with market news and develop your own views.
