For questions that are similar to this if it is about something you are less familiar make the spread of bid to ask a lot bigger but if you are asked about something you are familiar with tell them and make it a smaller spread. This question in general in my opinion is stupid as fuck but they ask it to see how you think

k means thousand. Answer within 500,000 sq miles, in other words. The answer should be between your bid-ask. Here's a thread with a decent answer for how to estimate the answer to the sq mileage of the US.
