Stanford GSB alum creates a new online dating app

One of the most over saturated markets out there, but this 2014 Stanford GSB alum founded a site called The League. Ostensibly, it's a hybrid of Tinder, Coffee Meets Bagel, and Hinge. It was created because the founder, Amanda Bradford, felt that Tinder was too sketchy and wanted to create a site that brings together the "elite." Her site is invite only, and thus far the members are mostly highly educated tech/startup people in the SF Bay area. It has various filters so that the user can prevent those not meeting his/her criteria from even seeing their profile.

I am pretty actively involved in online dating sites, so this interests me greatly. On one hand I find the site reasonably interesting. On the other hand though, I'm not quite sure how this site is fundamentally different from others. People already use filters anyways either directly or indirectly (women do this a lot with race). They usually won't even read or respond to a message from someone who does not meet the basic threshold. Another thing to consider is that the type of uber successful alpha men who this site is catering to, have no problem finding quality women on their own. Thus, an online dating app is usually a convenient way to screw a lot of chicks with no repercussions. It seems like for women such as Bradford, they want The League to lead to more permanent arrangements, hence the rejection of Tinder. Either way, it will be interesting to see what unfolds since it has already garnered a lot of media attention.

This site will benefit gold diggers, but no one else. I'm sorry, but if you are that selective with who you meet you should be on Match or something. You can sort by education, geography, etc. Unless this site is full of Stanford models then you aren't going to have guys on it.

Tinder, OKC, Match, all own this space.

That's my impression as well. It was created so that self-absorbed women such as Bradford can have easy access to men who meet their insane criteria: a 6'3'' good looking white guy who is also ripped, athletic, loves kids, is a great cook, helps the poor, elite ug and MBA, traveled all over the world, speaks multiple languages, and is the next Zuckerberg. The men who do meet that criteria (or reasonably close to it) will have so many options that the site will just be used for pure amusement (i.e., pump and dump). Aside from that, I'm not quite sure what value this will add to men in general.

The League is sort of similar to the social networking group, The Ivy, which is catered to "upscale" "elite" professionals in various major cities. You have to submit an application along with an interview. Members pay $45/month and in return get access to various social events and outings. Problem is that the group has already been diluted since after all, you only increase revenues by accepting more members. Meanwhile, the people who really are that amazing are not going to waste their time at pretentious Ivy events. I think The League will follow a similar path.

People like that actually exist? I thought that was just the alter ego of everyone on WSO.

There's already a more developed version of this (not an app, but a dating site) called Three Day Rule. I know one of the chief people from high school, and he/she is a hardcore liberal Democrat with no problem at all hooking rich, successful people up with other rich successful people in an invite-only manner, contributing to the self-segregation of the races and classes.

It doesn't surprise me at all that an elitist app like The League would get its start in San Francisco.

Look, I'm a hardcore conservative, but this is not limited to liberal democrats. People are tribal and elitist by nature; they are just elitist about different things.

My point was, they will talk egalitarianism out of one side of their mouth and then segregate themselves from the peons in practice. I wasn't surprised at all. This girl I was speaking of lived in a mansion in high school--both her parents were hardcore leftists.

She sounds vapid af to me, no wonder she's single.

Nearly stopped reading after this:

By the time Ms. Bradford had arrived at Fort Mason, her battery was already at 1 percent. But she zeroed in on a tall guy with a Rolex the size of a Frisbee, and offered her standard opening line, “Are you single?”

She raised a couple mill for THIS? Jesus. What super successful man requires a dating app to find actual relationships? As previously mentioned here, this will be more of a 'roster' management app-but all of the successful guys I know are already killing it on Tinder, Match.com, and OKCupid, especially if they're younger than 50.
