Start in operations or client services, switch to HF analyst?
Is it possible to start out in operations or client services, where it could be easier to get a foot in the door, and then transfer over to an analyst position?

Possible? Sure. Likely? Absolutely not. HFs are extremely selective and we have no reason to take a risk on an ops person with no relevant experience. You're better off going to a role where you can develop a transferable skill set.
k thanks
If you can only get ops, take it and push to FO, then maybe you can get to HF. Also, look at HF ops...but I have no idea what they do.
http://www.wallstreetoasis.com/forums/mission-bo2foi-did-it refer to this...you might be a room away from where analyst sit but trust me..its a world away! and there is hardly any transferable skills if you just foucs on doing ur 8 hours daily
Yes, and it's not as uncommon as you would think from reading this website. Certainly not the easiest method and takes a decent amount of luck around timing and fit, but I've seen it many times.
So get crackin'
it really depends on the culture of your spot. my fund has several notable examples of ops guys going into trading and even research. if people like you and recognize your potential (which is only possible if you have a decent amount of exposure to front office) then you're almost wasted doing ops work
