Is it worth to go to a start up in early stage of career?
I have an interview with a start up (which actually has taken majority of the market share of its industry and it's growing fast) as a FP&A analyst. I have finance background and some related experience but not actually FP&A role.
I'm interned in FP&A but a little worried is it a good thing to start my FP&A career from a small company? As a start up, there are definitely some growing pains compared to big firms ( no benefits and the finance team is small). I'm worried is it good for my career because most of people would start from big firms and then go to start up but I seemed to be the opposite?
Start-up Experience? Is it Worth It? (Originally Posted: 11/23/2017)
Hi all, currently I am a freshman undergraduate at a non-target in the Northeast and am possibly looking to break into VC after I finish school. I was networking with a general partner at an early-stage VC firm over the summer, things went well and I recently emailed them about potential summer opportunities at either one of their startups or if they know anyone at other VC firms in the area willing to take on interns. This particular firm has already made several full-time hires so they are not looking at taking on any interns unfortunately (which I already knew). This person did mention that they will let me know of any opportunities that arise at their startups and then asked me, "Is there a particular industry or area of business in which you're hoping to gain more exposure? ". While it all sounds promising there are a few questions I have:
Is the startup experience worth it? Especially to VC firms or even IB firms as well (don't want to leave the door fully closed on IB)? Has anyone here even interned at a startup? Did you learn anything useful? I just don't want to waste a summer doing something that won't truly benefit me.
