Started at regulator to end up at stock exchange; switching to IB post-MBA
Hello all,
I am fairly new to WSO community, and as I plan to increase my involvement, I would like to give brief info on my background to kick things off:
Being an international student, did my bachelor's at a non-target business school; without much guidance on proper job search back in the day only thing I attained was a high GPA (3.81/4.00). I returned to my home country right after graduation, starting my career at the local financial regulator, with the focus on capital markets. Fast forward two years, I was headhunted as the chief of trading at the only stock exchange of the country.
Targeting more execution-focused line of work, I plan to switch to IB post-MBA (hopefully at a target school). My unorthodox background raised some eyebrows as I talked to several people in the industry so far, some saying that I would probably excel in FIG coverage, but it is very specific and hard to get in compared to generalists.
What does WSO community think of my plan? Is it doable? Or I am kind of fooling myself here?
P.S. Before going to MBA, I plan to secure an internship at a client-focused job (e.g. corporate banking) to get acquainted with the work environment. Despite lagging on job search back in college, I secured a summer internship in my home country's EY branch (local offices are significantly easier to get in compared to US/EU offices); got a full-time return offer for Assurance practice but didn't go back, as the job seemed to monotonous.
