Starting a ("free") Private University
Disclaimer: We are not serious. This is just a fun complicated thought
Well, not exactly. I was speaking to a few prominent business friends and we planned out this layout for a "freemium" Private University, tell me what you think though. I WANT YOUR OPINIONS
The University and Academy would be totally tuition free, and we'd recruit 4th graders across the USA showing a strong track record and heightened interest in certain subjects alongside above average literacy rates.
Once we identify those people, we bring them in for non-standardized testing such as putting them in a playground with other prospects to see how they interact with each other, (who becomes a "leader" in organizing games, and etc.)
It would be cored around Finance, Computer Sci, and Med (screw engineering).
Now, I'm going to describe our stages.
We'd setup a Private Academy divided into 4 parts with a huge space between campus' for the following grades:
- 3 - 5
- 6 - 8
- 9 - 12
- College (Boarding Mandatory)
Stage 1: Grades 3 - 5
After testing we submit 10% of the students into the program and have them spend grades 3 - 6 exploring basics in math, literature, and etc indirectly related to Finance, Computer Sci, and Med
Stage 2: Grades 6 - 8
For these next three years they will spend a full year learning solely one subject. For example: Grade 6 = Med, Grade 7 = Computer Sci, Grade 8 = Finance. They do job shadows of people in those fields and learn all about that sole subject for the given year.
Stage 3: Grades 9 - 12
------------ Grade 9, they declare a major. Med, Computer Sci, or Finance Once they choose from one of those three, they spend the next 4 years in a college-like environment where they intensively learn about that subject, join a mini Greek row to band together social groups, join two sports, be put into a gym 2hr/4dys a week, and join a yearly simulated internship pertinent to their subject. Example: If you a Med Major, you work in the school lab on a project with a professor. Students have 2 months off to schedule all by themselves throughout the year in certain zones.
Stage 4: College to Graduate
No Rules. No Restrictions. Campus Security only to regulate state law, the University has none. All the pre-Greek groups established in highschool move up to their own house a mile from the school and 2 miles away from any neighbors. We want to promote independence and responsibility while rewarding years of study with a free-for-all 4 year final stretch.
Exam Months though, the social calendars are shut down. Cheating is permitted but anyone who does so receives a 60% on the given exam which is enough to pass, but not enough to reasonably get by.
Stage 5: Graduation (Masters or PHD Required)
Graduation. Boom. Set-off into the real world and hopefully we will have the ability to link students straight into jobs when we raise notoriety. That, or the school will start/acquire it's own portfolio of companies to optionally fill with graduates.
Now, we make money by charging all students 3% of their income or 4% of their assets forever, perhaps once they reach a certain threshold like "at least $90K a year" to give them time to save. So, after a few graduate classes we'll be raking in some solid cash. We may charge a down-payment of 50K that students get back once they graduate to keep accessible cash on tap in the system.
Of course, the USA would most likely NEVER let us do something like this, so ideas that floated were seeking alternative countries and building family housing in a separate existing town or just go absolutely nuts with it and create an island to build the campus and declare it it's own country just as the "world map" island off the coast of the middle east was done.
Before you comment, just know we're not serious about this. it's just an idea, and a fairly expensive one.
what do you think?
biggest hurdle is, do you think parents are going to want to send their kids to some unproven/test program through their formative years? hahah good luck
Family Housing. Exclusivity is attractive to anyone mate.
wat
That's what we say.
doesn't sound terrific to be honest, well, for finance at least since it looks like those kids might turn out socially awkward not focusing on sports, music, etc (though it really depends on the 4th graders, most just haven't built up their people sense yet), same for med/comp sci which are also very pedigree oriented, and also prefer well rounded kids. Honestly, I could only see this working well for engineering, or boring theoretical subjects (philosophy, physics, chemistry, etc) stuff that would lead these kids into MIT/CIT for grad school
What do you mean did you not read the HS pre-greek life, required dual sports, unrestricted college life? Far from awkward mate, they'll be outgoing students. In terms of the pedigree, I don't get what you mean, it's an easy task to teach these subjects.
Khan Academy already has Bill Gates' support, and he's years ahead of you.
Again, we're not serious. Just a fun thought.
How much pot was smoked in the brainstorming of this?
Hahaha, no no, this was done over dinner on a few napkins. I put a thing at the end that said we're not serious. not in the slightest, no one is out making the executive summary or whatnot. It's just a fun little thought.
awesome idea but making it free might be really hard.
