Not in VC but used to work for a tech startup and led the fundraising round. Still friendly with our lead investor too.

In my humble opinion, sales is probably the second best. I was a chief revenue officer and our product also had upsell opps from the customer success side. I came up through the sales side and then eventually oversaw revenue generation throughout the company. Being able to commercialize the product is paramount and it's possible it puts you more on a PortCo management side but I think it's a valuable skill to have on the investment side. DISCLAIMER: I left the company after the raise and it's still in business but no exit (yet?) so take it with a grain of salt.

Fair enough and thanks for jumping in as I don't want to steer OP in the wrong direction. Probably also depends on the stage of the VC. The round we raised was a seed 2 round and the Managing Partner at the VC was a guy who sold two companies but was always the "salesy" type of executive at those companies he founded. Could also be an east coast thing, who knows.
