Stats for JD -> MBB?

Hi, posting for a friend in law school who's thinking about consulting. Are there any recruiters here or JDs who have made the jump that can speak to the stats required for a first round interview?

I've heard that GPA doesn't matter as much as it does for biglaw vs. the weight of leadership/extracurriculars but can anyone speak to this?

GPA definitely matters less than biglaw because consulting actually uses the interview process to evaluate your intelligence in addition to fit (whereas legal interviews are almost all fit based). Likewise, MBB firms care a lot more about your resume and well-roundedness because the screening process is simply more rigorous than looking at your school + GPA.

Not sure if there's a formal GPA cutoff, a linkedin search of MBB firms by law school might be revealing. Anecdotally, most of the people that I've seen make the jump to MBB have some combination of T6 law school + a grade selective firm on their resume.

Went through this process recently so feel free to PM.

Can you describe your transition from a firm to MBB (i.e. law school, firm, how you got an interview, how interviews went etc)? Thanks!

Sure. I went to a "top 14" law school, which I believe the group we generally recruit at (practically though I think just about everyone comes from the upper half of that school list). If you're at one of those schools, it's a fairly straightforward process (though not in the traditional law firm on campus interview format) - they actively solicit applications and come on campus for presentations. You apply, and generally at these schools they cast a wide net so if you have a convincing resume and decent grades you have a reasonably good chance of landing a first round interview.

But the interviews matter way more than at a law firm - they're quite rigorous and need serious prep work to do well on. Made tougher by the fact that most law schools (mine at least) have no idea how to prep their students for a consulting interview, so you have to hustle a bit more on your own.
