Stick with Engineering or switch?

I go to a non-target university, but it is a top 10-15 engineering school. I've recently become very interested in S&T, to a lesser extent IBD. I am currently studying engineering and would likely do Civil Engineering if I continued this path. However, I've thought about switching to Finance as it seems more aligned with my goal of doing S&T as there are some alums that have broken into S&T from finance. However, I got a 4.0 GPA my first semester in Engineering and I feel a high Engineering GPA could help more so than a high Finance GPA.

I've seen on here that banks like a more quant-ish degree, especially for S&T roles even though you won't be using the high level math on a daily basis.

Basically would you do Engineering and try for the High Finance jobs, or just go ahead and switch into Finance?

Do you have any interest in oil & gas trading? If so, and depending if your school's Petroleum Engineering Department is strong, I would actually switch to PetE. It is not uncommon to see energy trading firms hire PetE graduates.

You are also right when you say High Engineering GPA > High Finance GPA.

If I were you, I would stick to engineering but also try to join some finance clubs/organizations and try to network to land a finance internship. One Engineering internship + One Finance internship would look very good.

Oil and gas trading does seem interesting, unfortunately my school does not have a PetE degree although some oil and gas companies do OCR for engineers, but mainly in traditional engineering roles to my knowledge. Definitely something I'll keep in mind.

Also, I am going to try to get involved in an investment organization at my university. However, it is competitive so hopefully that works out. I'm also considering cold-emailing local PWM offices as it seems like an easy internship to get.

My Engineer friends said Civil/Industrial engineering were the 'bitch' majors of the engineering department, but they are still probably significantly harder than any business degree aside from actuarial sciences

Stick with engineering.

Civil and Industrial and easier than ChemE and EE, but you're still taking Calc1,2 Multi Var, DiffQ, Linear Algebra, Vector Geo, Physics 1,2 Chemistry, Statics, Materials all in your first two year so I would say its a "bitch" major
