Strategic Finance Exit Opps
Many view Strat Fin as being an interesting exit following a stint in IB. How about from there? Do most people just bounce around from Strat Fin at one company to another? I mean more strategic oriented strat fin, not vanilla FP&A. How is B-School placement? Any low likelihood to break into VC/PE? Go back to suffering at a higher level in banking?

What exactly is "strategic oriented strat fin" vs "vanilla FP&A"?
I think a lot of companies lump in financial reporting teams, planning teams, and other modeling teams under the 'FP&A' umbrella, so I'd guess financial reporting.
Vanilla FP&A is just going to be like monthly or quarterly data updates, basic variance analysis, etc. Not even sure how much true modeling is done in these types of groups. Strategic oriented strat fin is where you are working on facilitating long term and shot term strategic decision making in conjunction with c-suite executives. Here you'd be responsible for ad hoc projects, revenue builds, market sizing, new product entry, M&A (assuming the org does not have a separate corp dev team). Also probably more in depth revenue builds at the unit economic level. Notably also handling board meeting material preparation, fundraising materials. Kinda like a hybrid consulting and banking (more so from the technical and modeling exposure I would say, not based on the transactional element).

This guy is correct, this is what I do. My hope is to parlay this into VC.

It's really hard to generalize (can you really say whether b-school placement from IB is good/bad without knowing whether we're talking BB or a regional boutique?), but usually you are not leaving IB to go to strategic finance just to go back to IB/PE. Like yes, it is possible (have a few peers that have done this), but if your end goal is IB/PE, just skip the strategic finance path altogether. FWIW, PE likely not an option; VC more of a possibility.
