Do you have any specific questions? Your current ones are a bit broad for me/anyone to provide any meaningful responses
In terms of case type, we don't have any specific types. It may lean towards market assessment and market sizing focused since a good percentage of our work focuses on commercial due diligences
Hey there.
Sure thing. I guess most of my questions center around the types of work done in the Deals team, and then the interview structure.
How much of the work is CDD and growth strategy? What type of work, outside of CDD/growth, does Deals cover?
Is the team still expanding in terms of headcount? I've read past posts that mentioned this was the case, but they were a bit dated.
What industry makes up a lot of the CDD / growth work? Assuming it's tech/industrials.
Interview Prep: Was told to focus on Deals team type case studies so am focusing on M&A and market entry/growth cases -- am I on the right track with this?
If I make it past the first rounds, are the second rounds the same structure? (2 45-min. interviews) Also just assuming the cases are going to be more quantitative given the type of work Deals does -- is that a fair asumption?
Thanks!
Most of the team's work is those two project types. It seems like you're pretty aware of what these projects entail so I won't get too much into the details, but the nature of CDDs vs Strategy means very different selling processes and timelines. Meaning, I would say even though revenue and project length may be around a 50/50 split between CDDs and non-CDD project types, its more around 70/30 in terms of actual project volume. On a day-to-day, that means most of the projects you would be staffed on are CDDs. CDDs span across all industries - we have a generalist model meaning you might be working on an energy project one week, then finish up and roll onto an industrials project the next. I would say anecdotally, we have an especially strong IPS, HIA, and TMT pipeline because of our very strong partners in those sectors.
Outside of CDDs and growth strategy, we also sell other strategy projects within the transaction world. Examples include value creation, where we help clients expand top-line through pricing optimization, sales force effectiveness etc., or market entry strategy projects, in which we help clients create an investment thesis and identify attractive acqusition targets.
Headcount-wise, the team is still growing like crazy. With the wave of 2018 interns / campus hires joining, we just grew the team by 33% or so. We are still heavily recruiting on campus and I would expect another big influx in 2020. To support this growth of staff, I think we hired 6 partners / MDs within the last 12 months, from mostly from MBB or strategy boutique shops. We just added a Boston office as well whose headcount is growing quickly.
I can't help as much on the interviewing end. Believe our cases are pretty similar to what you would find at other strategy shops. If I were to pick an area of focus, I would practice cases on market assessments - so really thinking about how you would commercial evaluate a market and what are the key drivers of value in each. I wouldn't say we are quant-heavy relatively, but that's just kind of a table-stakes aspect of interviewing at any reputable shop.
Best of luck! Hopefully these responses were helpful.
Regarding the due diligence cases, I thought those were handled by the PEVC group, or are the two the same thing?
There are different types of DD's like Financial, Technology, Operational etc. The PEVC team will do Operational DDs while the Deals Strategy team focuses on CDDs. Difference being that in an ODD, you're analyzing a company's operations, supply chain, and manufacturing base while in a commercial diligence, you're helping the client understand the market opportunity, customer, competitive landscape and ability for target to meet business plan from a commercial perspective
Thanks, this was helpful!
Would you / anyone happen to know if final rounds have gone out already?
I did my first round almost 1 week ago. I emailed HR beginning of last week and was told I'd hear back this past week, but nothing.
Haven't received any calls on feedback for my first round either...would appreciate any insight.
