Structured Equity Research Process
Hello, I am in college and have been trading a small account of around 50k, primarily investing for the short term (1 week - 1 quarter). So far, I have been trading successfully based on new market news updates and fundamental analysis of 10-K's.
I have been trying to find ways to formally structure my research process for trading over the summer. My research process right now is to start from a global macro framework within a specific industry (crude oil prices, extra semiconductor inventory, specific markets poised for growth) and find companies within the respective industry. After this, I just read up on market news, analysis on seekingalpha and earnings reports to find which companies to invest in.
Although I have had success in last year's bull run using this approach, I would like to formalize a process for this summer. I have read McKinsey's Valuation and many other books pertaining to general economics (Market Cycles, Red Capatlism, Great Rebalancing) and specific industries to learn more about the value chain. I also keep up with current events and common economic indicators. However, I am having trouble finding specific catalyst events.
I was wondering how professionals start the research process. Do people start at a global macro level trying to find trends to exploit with specific companies? How do you reduce bias while coming up with a thesis for a stock? And what is the general framework people use to find new opportunities?
