The problem seems to be that you can't find a way to justify the price tag for the clothes that you actually want to buy. Fashion is subjective by nature, and therefore the price will generally not be reflective of the actual value of the clothing. It's quite obvious that the production cost of a Kiton polo isn't anywhere near its $750 price tag. That said, many still buy their polos for the brand's reputation of exclusivity and quality. If you must justify spending money on expensive clothing in a quantitative manner, consider how often the clothing will be worn. For example, let's say you go all out and purchase a $1200 dollar wardrobe ( around 1% of your pretax annual income). Assume that the clothes will last for 1.5 years (547.5 days) and will be worn on average 6 days out of the week, bringing the total days worn down to (469.286). Under these assumptions, your clothes would only cost about $2.56 a day to wear. A wardrobe of twice the value ($2400) would still only cost around 5 bucks. In my opinion, 3 dollars a day is a steal for looking great.
Yeah you're totally right about that. Wouldn't mind spending around $1,500.. the only thing is that the department stores that I've visited carry mostly expensive designers (from what I've seen) and my total expenses would therefore be a lot higher. This might have come across as if I wanna get through with as little money as possible but I don't mind spending a decent amount on good quality clothes, just thought that some/most of the brands mentioned on here are not really worth the money.
You definitely shouldn't be spending 300 on a blazer, Ann Taylor has black ones for 100-150.
Look at Everlane for decent quality tops, uniqlo is fine, even h&m is fine for blouses. As long as you don't look like you just rolled out of bed, you really don't have to spend a fortune. (Speaking as someone with a huge designer fashion problem).
Which specific Ann Taylor store would you recommend in Manhattan (in case there are any differences in size)? The one I've been to didn't really have a large sortiment and was rather small. What about the subbrand Loft? Would you recommend that?
My friend works at an EB that's business formal everyday and she wears Express and Ann Taylor dresses that are like ~$80 literally every day.
Do you guys have brand recommendations for pants - Slim Fit style? Prefere them over straight leg. Haven't checked if Ann Taylor has any options. In particular, I am looking for a simple beige, grey and navy pant and/or skirt suit.
Check out the Banana Republic Sloan pant (will need "long" length if you are 5'7" or taller) for a slim fit trouser. Century 21 downtown has some great items - it's similar to a TJ Maxx, Nordstrom Rack, etc. but HUGE with lots of great brands. Reiss also has good sales a few times a year but most of their stuff is worth paying full price for anyways. I'm also a big fan of DvF - you can find her stuff at stores throughout the city but it's a bit pricier. I was a fan of the Ann Taylor near Rockefeller Center in the past but none of their styles have been to my liking over the past few seasons. Whatever you do, get your separates altered (especially jackets). It's amazing what that can do for making something look much more expensive than it is. Good luck!
