Struggling with internship opps.. Thoughts?
I go to a targetish school. Have three internship opps, none of which are exciting. The one most related to finance is a real estate internship at a fairly small firm that rally doesn't excite me. Do you think it's too late in the game to go crazy with cold calling and networking? Are there any AM or IB firms that would take on an unpaid intern this late in the game? Even if it was informal and part time. I would practically kill for something relevant to put on my resume for recruiting in the winter...
Realistically for ibd you are too late in the game. Any BB or MMB will not hire at this point in time, due to a very structured recruitment process. You might have some luck with smaller regional boutiques.
Keep in mind that even if you go all out with cold calling and networking it will be hard to line anything up immediately, because it just takes time. Take the job out of the three you have in which you will have the most success. At the same time start networking and cold calling people in the industry, but do not reject all three offers in hopes you can get an ibd gig within next few months.
What year are you? If you are a freshman or even a sophomore, you can do the cold-calling but failure isn't the end of the world. If you are a junior, it still isn't the end of the world but keep in mind alternative methods to pump up your resume (shadowing etc.).
How can I go about getting some kind of job shadow? I am a sophomore.
Since it is lower commitment than a real internship firms may be willing to let you shadow someone for a week or one day or whatever. Same way you'd approach the normal cold calls but with a lower "ask." Also, since you seem to have limited finance experience remember that you don't HAVE to shadow someone in IB--financial advisory, corp. finance would also be interesting.
If you have money to burn, some companies offer pretty expensive IB training programs that place you at an IB or so they say - not sure exactly how it works, I think I heard that some basically have created a firm and get you to do IB type work that you can put on your resume. Google Kerburn Rose, I think that's one of them?
Otherwise take an internship from what you have and network and try to get IB in the fall
