Student with IB internships looking at real estate private investing careers

Hello!

So I'm currently a sophomore with a bunch of IB internships. Realized late in the game IB is not what I want to do, wanted to get on the principal real estate investing side. Have a boutique "REPE" multi-family investments shop internship geared up for this summer.

It's easier to get into IB as a junior SA but how do I do the same for RE if I want to end up in the private equity space?

So what I meant to say was. I am wanting to go on the REPE acquisitions route of the industry. And all the experience I have had so far is in IB

What do you recommend I do? I don't really want to stay on the IB route anymore, realized I didn't thoroughly enjoy what I was doing.

And I have an operations, kind of asset management role lined up for this summer at this boutique REPE shop. Would that be a good start? What can I do to stand out, and get a shot at the bigger name firms for junior summer?

Oh, well that is a much simpler question. So clearly you have an internship to do this summer, that sounds good. Next summer you can target internship roles at major buyside firms (hopefully land a true/legit SA role), then cross fingers for return offers (note, this is less common in the "REPE" world than IB or brokerage, as they generally hire fewer UGs naturally), and apply for jobs at all the firms you want to work for (I generally advise a wide strategy, narrow casting out of UG doesn't make sense).

You may also want to intern with a brokerage shop (ideally in investment sales or debt/equity placement). You may like brokerage more than IB, and they hire tons direct from UG and set people up decently well for buyside roles after a few years (similar to IB).

To be blunt, you "background" in investment banking as a sophomore isn't going to mean a ton. Internships rarely care about "prior intern experience", but all that said, it should look pretty good on your resume as you apply for SA roles and full-time roles.

So, just keep doing what your doing!

I also do not fully know what the op is saying but I will ask if you have any advice on getting into REPE. Is REIB the best route, and what type of internships would be ideal to shoot for during college(I am currently a freshman)?
