Stumbled into PE interview

Hi everyone,

I’m currently a consultant at T2 strategy firm. I was recently reached out to by a PE shop looking to bring on a pre-MBA consultant, and it seems likely I’m going to have an interview in roughly a month or so. I’m really interested in the position, but figured that I wouldn’t really have the option to interview at any reputable PE shops coming from a non IB/MBB background. Let me know how you would best spend the next month if you were in my shoes. Thank you!!

Background:
Financial Modeling novice
Semi target undergrad - math major, varsity athlete
Very good interviewer and interpersonal skills

  1. Create cheat sheets for all of the clients/mandates you've worked on with strategic AND financial considerations. would you invest in this company? if yes, why, if not, why not? If you could buy this company for X, would it be a good deal?

  2. Related to #1 above, know the sources and uses of an LBO model, how to walk through one and ideally how to build one (at least a basic one) in Excel so that you can be given basic assumptions and get to an IRR in a reasonable timeframe (~30min)...

They probably won't expect you to be an Excel whiz, but if you can demonstrate that you truly are interested in being an investor and you are looking at businesses with that mindset, then you have a shot!

Good luck! Patrick

I'm in a very similar situation... T2, pre-MBA, semitarget, stumbled into a PE interview. (Guess they're handing them out to anyone now haha)

  1. I can clearly argue and articulate the strategic rationale for investing in the assets/deals I've diligenced, but am unable to answer the "If you could buy this company for X, would it be a good deal?" What resources would you recommend to build an answer to this question? Presumably some back of the envelop DCF analysis math?

  2. Seems straight forward

Thanks!
