Stupid peasants who make stupid, mindfuck decisions

Stupid peasants like this are the reason why I lose my faith in humanity. When people aren't ambitious enough, I just feel they should be high-fived on the face with a chair.

This is the article that it came from. Hardly agree with the implied point of the article that the American South's manufacturing boom has been a failure because of these few sad stories. But this anecdote was really tragic... She left school to go work in manufacturing, not collect welfare checks. Not the decision I would make, but I was not in her shoes. Also, not to take this off topic, but I definitely don't agree that a college education is for everyone.

Throwing away her ambitions for love is by far the stupidest excuse I've seen. Her tragedy may have been averted had she decided to go for a less risky, respectable career, but instead, she threw away her future (and her life) for something so fickle.

This isn't about college education vs trade school, but more about ambition. Also, had she gone to trade school, she might have gained some training that might have prevented this premature death. But her choice was careless.

You know different people have different ambitions, right? World needs ditch diggers. Ditch diggers rent from me and buy the bullshit I sell online.

It is such an odd paradigm how people can read the same narrative but take away completely different conclusions. Yours being, that Elsea should have followed her ambitions. Respectable, it's your opinion.

What I take away is that the factory workers (allegedly) had never been given proper training about how to reboot the machine(s) on the assembly line. In effect, it may have cost Elsea her life. The finance guy in me would assume that safety courses were never taught due to laziness or any type of pressure from corporate to cut costs....again, just an assumption.

I just took a snippet of that article that illustrated the way most people go about and plan their "careers". Overall, I agree with your takeaway. But I also hate it when people who were given the opportunity to do something better just throw it away like she did. I mean, she got a scholarship to attend a med program!

So she chose love over potentially becoming a doctor in 10 years and maybe you’re happy maybe not but now you have a bunch of debt and have to work a bunch to pay it down. I would go the med school route too, but aren’t you able to empathize and see how others may prioritize differently?
