stupid topic, but can you bring you own keyboard to work
I have a keyboard that I am really used to. no rgb or funky gaming stuff. Very muted appearance. Very quiet. I just like it cuz I have used it for awhile.
when the covid ends, would it be weird if i brought my own keyboard to work?
It would not be weird. I have my own keyboard and mouse, so do most guys on the floor.
I second this comment. Plenty of analysts had their own keyboards out of preference. Obv depends on each place/situation but just trying to share a helpful data point for you.
If this is consulting, it would be weird AF. I've been in consulting for a while now and I've never seen someone bring an external keyboard. If you want to be known as the keyboard guy, by all means go for it.
lol I just graduated and havent worked at an actual office. I definitely do not wanna stand out. I get your comment. Thanks for the info.
It depends on the IT guidelines of your firm and even your own BU. Some have BYOD written all over their team, and that is amazing unless something doesn't work out.
But if you are in a secure location (ie consultancy or government/DoD contractor, intelligence, external clients with enhanced security, etc... ), the answer is most likely a no. keyboards are sensitive devices were a logger can be placed. (example for a key croc https://hak5.org/products/key-croc)
But a normal IB/BB wouldn't necessarily have an issue with a keyboard or mouse.
In consulting, it would be weird but you could still do it. Most of us go into the office with just our laptops. A few have external monitors, but that's it.
I see. Just curious, I assume the reason why people mostly work on laptops is the vast amount of travelling that they have to do?
Yes, we typically travel Monday through Thursday, so it would be a waste of money for each of us to have separate cubes with multiple monitors each.
In your own company's office? Weird but whatever, you could get away with it
Client site? Very weird and probably wouldn't suggest it, since if a client finds it weird and says something to your manager it won't be a good look. Also it'd be a pain to travel with. Keep in mind that at client sites you probably won't have access to an external monitor beyond a small travel monitor if you choose to bring one (I do), so hooking an external keyboard up to a laptop and looking at the laptop will absolutely look weird
That said, if you come in with a "I've had some problems with minor arthritis and I find that using a dedicated keyboard makes it a lot better" I don't think anybody would dare say anything else
I think I should've said this on the post to be more specific. I was curious about whether consultants would use like external monitors/external keyboards in their offices. I would never bring my own keyboard to the client site, as I would not use laptop + keyboard. Do you mind elaborating how it is like in offices regarding external accessories?
Assuming you work in a firm with standard consulting travel expectations, your firm's office won't have assigned desks. Instead, there will typically be an open office environment populated with desks that already have one monitor you can plug into. This would mean that you either need to bring the keyboard every day or find a place to stash it
If you work in an office environment with an assigned desk, using your own keyboard would be totally 100% fine
