suits question
One question regarding getting a suit off the rack vs tailored. Obviously tailored suits would fit best (if the tailor is half decent).
How does tailoring a suit in the US work? Do I get them from a brand which makes off the rack suits like Suitsupply, and maybe other fancier brands that I don't know or from a more traditional tailor like Mr. Ned?
In Asia, most tailored suits are not branded I think. Does anyone care what brand is your tailored suit and where you got it (Asia, US branded vs non branded) if the suit fits well?
Also, if I get my suit tailored in Asia, do I have to worry about if the cut is right (ie would I get the typical American cut)?
Can someone shed some light on this issue?
OTR and tailored are not mutually exclusive. Buy off the rack, then get it tailored.
I tried a made to measure suit from Asia (it was like 350, not the best quality). The fit wasn't noticeably better than a tailored OTR suit.
I imagine there is a noticeable difference if you went high end MTM or Bespoke...but really, don't spend that much on clothing. As much as Wall St. likes to obsess about clothes, you could wear JC Penny $20 dress shirts with no problems. After ~20 hours in the office, nobody cares.
You also don't wear suits often (outside a few banks). Generally dress pants and a conservative button-down shirt are fine.
Get something that fits and is in your budget. A $150 suit from JC Penny that fits correctly will look a lot better than a $1,000 suit that doesn't fit. The same goes for shirts.
Stick to a suit that is 100% wool and can be adjusted.
I think you're definitely confusing tailored and made-to-measure/bespoke. When we refer to tailored, we simply mean altered to fit you better, hence it is very common to take an off the rack suit in to be tailored. Made to measure refers to a tailor taking your measurements and crafting a suit to your specifications.
As for getting a suit made in Asia, I wouldn't worry too much about it. Usually they have catalogs or picture books for you to look through and note what you're interested in and often follow trends in western fashion. If in doubt, just hammer out all the details you might want specifically - higher armholes, slimmer fit, lower buttons, etc.
Look at pictures online to figure out what you want and as long as you don't look like you're wearing a sack or just stepped off some avant garde runway, you should be fine.
But as West Coast said, nobody honestly cares that long into the workday anyways.
yea, I was confused between MTM and bespoke.
Bespoke in Asia at a decent place is around 600-700USD. Possible to get such a deal in NYC?
Also, bespoke would definitely not be branded (ie not Brooks, or whatever brands) and nobody will care?
Is the reason why people go Brooks Brothers or the likes in the US because bespoke in the US is way more expensive?
