Summer Associate on S&T desk
What does he do? I'm assuming we won't be getting as much coffee as analysts...is it all just sitting over a guy's shoulder? in banking, they can give Associates deals to work on because they have an analyst protecting their ass at the back and its a longer time frame..definite not true in S&T...so what do Associates do?
wait for someone who really knows, but I heard it can vary alot by the firm. e.g. some places just lump analysts and associates together in S&T, with the associates having a faster increase in responsibility. (?)
I was a summer associate in S&T last summer, as were many of my friends at other banks. It really varies a lot by bank and desk.
I was on trading desks and was actually given a lot of real work to do. Mostly excel based projects to make processes more efficient, analyze data and other misc tasks. This also depends a lot on the product and how streamlined the infrastructure of the desk is already. However, at many other banks associates spend all their time "sitting with" traders and asking them questions, watching them work, etc.
If you are on a sales desk, you will be listening in on calls, "sitting with" salespeople and maybe doing some sort of analysis of clients or trends or something.
At my firm there was a specific movement to avoid making interns get coffee and lunch and be errand boys. So that was nice. But I don't think that is very prevalent at most banks anymore anyway.
