summer internship interview selection
Hello guys,
I am just very curious about all the selection process thing. What are the banks looking for seriously? I got interviews from a couple BB banks and the top banks but I kept on getting rejected from banks such as citi and DB. What's the deal with that? Maybe I am just ranting cause I am worried I won't get a job. oh well.
Eric
its just a sign of the times....many BBs will be drastically reducing their summer internship programs..gl
there's so much randomness to the process this year. i got interviews at places like goldman and Lazard but got rejected by Jefferies
Yeah it's pretty much a crap shoot for me as well. I've gotten interviews at places like JPM/MS but rejected at places like Cowen & Co.
Your point is still valid broadly, but I think Cowen, specifically, cancelled their summer program. I don't know specifics but I've heard they are in dire straits these days.
Cowen is definitely accepting applications, but as far as actually giving offers I'm not sure.
A lot of it is about having connections with people who are looking at the resumes. Obviously if you have a good relationship with at least one of the analysts/associates doing the screening, you're much more likely to get selected.
yeah, i can confirm that Cowen is at least interviewing people
I was getting really depressed about getting rejected from HLHZ, Jefferies and DB..
but then i got UBS first round!? wtf!?
HLHZ restructuring is pretty good. Deutsche Bank has some solid groups too. i wouldn't discount them just because they don't have the same name recognition to the general public
so eric1025, is this for this year? or was this for last summer? - - - interview for UBS
and was this for UBS summer in nyc? or in hk? or london?
Don't be too depressed about getting rejected by places like HLHZ. If I remember correctly their SA class last year was only like 10 kids, and I imagine it will be even smaller this year. A place like UBS will be giving out a ton more first round interviews than a smaller shop I would assume.

This is definitely true. For example, my school has 60 interview slots just for banking from ubs vs. 8 from HLHZ for restructuring/corp finance/fas combined.
it's for UBS LA IBD this summer. I guess these whole things are really just luck. I have a friend who's the same major as me ( pretty rare - electrical) same gpa( 3.4 v.s. 3.5) same sat score ( 1450 v.s. 1480) and same experience ( hedge fund v.s. sp 500 company m&a group) and he got the job and i didnt. He then got rejected from ubs and i got the ubs one. seriously? haha
In London (where I'm based), I got interviews at places like UBS, JPM, etc. but got rejected without without even being invited to an interview from BoA, HSBC, etc. It really is down to luck, just how happy the interviewer is feeling, and whether they like the way your CV reads or not.
When should I start getting worried? I've applied to almost all of the BBs and haven't heard anything back yet- I'm a junior at a non-target school (I go to Hopkins) with a 3.9 GPA. I've talked to people at both MS and GS but haven't even gotten any emails or anything yet..
Only when you get rejected from those places. I don't believe GS got their recruitment into full swing yet, so until you start getting rejection emails coming in, I wouldn't worry. Just make sure that you hedge yourself by applying to a few other financials incase the IB dream won't materialise this year.
Just my 2c.
I know for some schools GS drop doesn't close until end of January, so there's still tikme. Similarly at other places, they have later interviews for non target candidates. At one bank specifically, I know for sure that non target candidates don't hear back for interviews until end of jan / early feb
