SunTrust Robinson Humphrey Group Choice?

I've seen some other posts about STRH but nothing all too recent. I'm looking to get some info on the best groups at STRH and which ones have the best deal flow and therefore the best exit ops. Secured the SA offer but now want to start working on getting my foot in the door with some different groups.

Hi gordonmonkey, any of these topics helpful:

Fingers crossed that one of those helps you.

Have a good amount of friends there, this is what they've talked about: best groups are their debt driven groups, especially with LevFin and AFES groups. The Portfolio management/underwriting group has some of the strongest deal flow since they lead the relationship with debt lending. PM team gets poached very often due to their deal flow, but they mostly go to coverage or product groups, not M&A. If you're looking in the South East, STRH has a very strong presence, but don't expect too much when you move out of the South East. With IB, their strongest groups are Healthcare, TMT, and energy (in no particular order). If you don't mind, which group did you end up in?

Yes, to add to your point though, from what I've seen, many of AFES group comes from PM since the PM team also handles higher yield lending as well. Basically, PM is a feeder of sorts. Though, they have been doing a lot more to retain the PM talent at the junior levels since the PM group has high turnover.

I actually recruited for their IB umbrella and not for PM so I'm limited to coverage groups and product groups. I'm thinking I'll try going for LevFin first and then maybe for Healthcare or Energy. I haven't been placed into a group yet as that takes a few more months before they get around to doing placements. Do you think it would be very premature and hurt my chances if I started networking now with groups that I'm interested in?

Depends. Some groups at STRH are pretty finicky about networking around and word travels fast. I would reach out and ask for informational interviews because you have an interest and want to learn more about IB work in their sector. To your point though, try to get into LevFin, then go for coverage banking, if all else fails DCM. It's a debt driven bank so try to get into their debt groups or coverage groups. Pm me if you have more questions though.
