Surfboard transport: Cali to Europe

First of all, I'm sorry for asking this question on a finance board like this, but I don't have access/an account to another American board, so I figured I could give it a shot.

I live in California and want to ship a surfboard (6"5') to Europe (Most people will think "wtf, why do you need a surfboard in Europe", but I have my reasons for that.. :D). Has anyone on here ever done something like this and can provide some info?

I'm afraid there are no surfers on WSO, but I'm going to give it a try anyway.

So thanks in advance!

Not a surfer but I shipped my golf clubs via FedEx from the midwest to London - was about 75 bucks, not bad at all. I'd guess the surfboard would be about 200. I also carried a really pricey instrument over but I bought a plane seat for that. A surfboard is nice and sturdy so it shouldn't be dangerous to ship. I'd also call your airline and see if they might be able to put it in oversize (are you flying over?). Also where are you going in Europe - you might be able to just pick one up there?

if you like it then you shoulda put a banana on it

I would recommend FedEx. Both boards I have ordered like this have been huge SUPs, and they came on a truck. Is there any way you can take the board on the flight? It's only a 6.5'. That might make things easier in my opinion. Send whatever else you can via FedEx, see about those flat rates overseas and then use one of your baggage checks for the board. Do you know your address? It would probably be easier to send a box of sweaters/shit and have that waiting for you than have a board waiting for you.

Just some thoughts. This can be an ongoing dialogue. I lived in Hawaii for a while and sent a ton of stuff over via FedEx, but unfortunately not a board - bought and left a small quiver there, only have a long board and SUPs here, never had to ship them. Again, I would probably bring the board on the flight if I needed to get it somewhere. People do that all the time.
