Surge in Hate crimes against Asian Americans during COVID

Couple relatives living in the "home country" sent me this stuff. They always thought that the US is a morally corrupt country where the police hunt down people and everyone's racist against Asian people (I can't blame them, that's what they see on their media), so I took it with a spoonful of salt. But this is just shocking.

In summary the articles discuss how Asian Americans are feeling unsafe due to the racist attitude they are facing. People screaming "go back to China and stop spreading viruses" when the person isn't even Chinese. FBI is warning about this stuff as well.

3rd link is BBC's data on reported hate crimes against Asians in the US during COVID.

Personally I haven't experienced any racism during COVID on my end, but this is shocking. None of the American media (both left and right) seem to cover it in depth. I mean BBC, the British Broadcasting Corporation, is covering it more in depth than anyone? I guess some people will always be f***ing racist assholes.

Quotes from the BBC article.

That's what happened to Ted Nghiem, a Vietnamese American in Philadelphia. He says in March, a man swore at him, yelling "get out of here, you caused coronavirus" - but it didn't particularly bother him.

In Texas, an Asian family, including a two-year-old and six-year-old, were stabbed in a supermarket.

EDIT: The BBC article shows that there has been a dramatic increase in hate crimes against Asian people all across the US. Most cases seem to be centered around Texas and NYC. I doubt there's any political motive there. So screw off with your conspiracy theories.

Funniest

Solid post, I saw many videos of black people assaulting Asians especially old ones. Funny how Asians didn’t decide to loot/burn down their city or protest, it sucks it didn’t get any media attention.

Let's not go there. It might go to a racial and political place where we probably don't want to go.

It's more of a cultural thing of "keeping in the hush hush" for Asian people.

Hahaha, fuck off dude. I'm Asian and definitely will not be used as your fucking pawn. It sounds like you believe in the "model minority," to which I would suggest you remove that concept from your head.

"Markets can stay irrational longer than you can stay solvent."

You should really work on your reading comprehension. Nothing about what I said means I'm using you as a pawn (you aren't special). Also I don't even know what a model minority is until I looked it up, again nothing about my post is elevating all Asians to a high degree of success in general, in fact that idea has never even crossed my mind once ever so take that as you will. All I'm really saying is that while both groups have received unfortunate happenings, one group didn't go around burning buildings.

Notice how all the perpetrators are boorish uneducated White trash from the likes of Rust Belt, ghettos infested with (illegal) lazy immigrants, etc. The same people who murdered Vincent Chin because of his skin color. These people don't go to college; they don't know how to think; they have no employable skills; they're deadweight. Yup, just a bunch of animals slumming it out day to day. Stay away from Walmart; stay away from the ghettos; carry a weapon of some sort and move along.

It's interesting to see who are perpetrating these crimes. People might take it the wrong way and try to make some "racial" or "political" judgments, none of which is really true. But the fact that people who commit these kind of crimes are often uneducated and have boorish backgrounds, regardless of their race or political beliefs, seems to say something fundamental about human beings - it's almost always the uneducated/poorly educated people who have strong prejudice and act out on such prejudice.

Perhaps it's all the same reason why there are still rednecks waving Confederate flags and defending slavery, Black supremacists who claim that all white people are devils, or even neo-Nazi groups in Japan who want to go back to killing Chinese people and enslaving the rest of Asia.

I almost feel bad for the perpetrators. They simply don't know better. Nor were they brought up to be even given a choice to know better.

You shouldn’t “feel bad” for people who intentionally break the law and commit crimes. I have met many poor uneducated people who live in the rural areas who are some of the most law abiding, patriotic, and kind citizens you can meet (And I’m not white btw). The idea that education = civility is something pushed by academia just to increase enrollment. Many of the BLM looters are in fact college educated. The silent majority has been silent way too long on these matters. It’s time to rise up and stand our ground against these criminals.

The news does not cover it much but yes these hate crimes against Asians have risen significantly, especially since March,  says someone close to me who works at federal institution that covers hate crimes (white supremacist groups have grown pretty much since the minute Obama got elected in 08 and hate crimes in general have been rising steadily since 2016).

These are not meant to be political comments but given that it is election season, the fact that there is COVID and it came from China, an ongoing trade war and both candidates who seem to want to be hard on China (or seen as such) , I would not expect things to get better for East Asians. Please be careful.

I used to do Asia-Pacific PE (kind of like FoF). Now I do something else but happy to try and answer questions on that stuff.

Yes its definitely sad to see so much racial violence. I think staying away from communities where riots/looting is occurring is step number 1. I would also think that carrying a non-lethal weapon is a good idea. Covid has created a lot of bigotry for asians very similar to how 911 led to a high number of hate crimes against muslims.

Wow, ok, a number of things to cover here. For one, the article regarding the FBI is a WARNING from March 2020 about a *potential* rise in anti-Asian hate crime due to Covid. I predict gold will increase 50% in 2021. Is that a fact or a prediction? Secondly, I really encourage people to actually read these articles critically. Look where the disproportionate share of the anti-Asian racial incidents are being *reported.* Los Angeles, Seattle, New York City. Maybe there is a political motivation here? Is it possible that in these hyper-liberal areas organizations are actively soliciting "hate" incidents? For example, the organization reporting the surge in reports of anti-Asian discrimination is STOP AAPI Hate at San Francisco State University, a radical far-left institution. Do we take as gospel what these people are saying or do they have a motivation to report a surge in hate incidents that should at least cause some critical questioning? (I'm not on the mailing list, but dollars to donuts this "research institute" is fundraising off of these reports.)

People in NYC are jerks--this is well known. Is it possible that otherwise normal incidents of people being jerks that are non-racial/non-Covid are being interpreted by Asians in liberal areas as racist incidents because the media they consume is WARNING them of a *potential* rise in hate crimes?

Also, what about magnitude? Is it possible that absolute numbers to us sound like a lot but relative to the enormous population are actually really, really small?

Well, there is some critical thinking.

Are New Yorkers not renown for (and proud of) their reputation as jerks? Or is "New Yorker" the newest protected class in 2020? It's been 6 weeks since I took my last corporate diversity class, so I may be a bit behind.

Speechless... get outta here.

I'm sorry did you forget to read the part about that there has been a dramatic increase in occurences of hate crimes against Asian people since Covid all across the US? I'm simply pointing out the fact that Covid has led to more racial bigotry against Asian people.

If you've been paying attention international media,  then you could see that how anti Asian sentiment is an issue not just in the US but also in Europe. But I guess that's all liberal BS.

A lot of these instances are not just centered around NYC, Seattle, and Cali, but also in Texas. I don't think there's any "political motive" there.

Next thing I know, you're gonna go on some rant about how increase in hate crimes against Muslims after 9/11 is just a politically charged nonsense.

Roof Koreans had to be there thanks to the city of LA not giving 2 shits about the Korean community in LA. I'd saybthays systemic racism. But "no it only applies to Black and Hispanic people" right?

If I lived in an rwa where people don't know better,, I'd seriously consider buying a gun. Maybe not an AR15, but a shotgun is probably better for self defense in close quarters. Heck why not get a concealed carry permit and get myself a Glock?

I personally want an X95 because I'm a big fan of IWI, it can share mags with AR15s, and I just like bullpup rifles. CA laws make it look really stupid with the handguard block thing.. but oh well. I'm also a big HK fan but it's hard to justify spending $4k+ on a single rifle

I'd still recommend going with rifles. Most people don't put the work in to become proficient with pistols. Pistols are probably the hardest ones to learn. You don't learn how to shoot any gun with one lesson, one class or by taking a CCW exam. It's something that takes constant maintenance to be good at just like any sport. Sure they are the simplest, but pistols are the hardest to actually hit whatever you're actually trying to hit. If you're not proficient with pistols, get a rifle with a red dot scope. Put the thing on target and it'll hit whatever the it's aiming at.

For transparency, I'm Southeast Asian. I look like a Hispanic-Asian mix, and have had my fair share of comments due to it. And yes, it's usually overlooked. I stay updated with the Asian community and American-based Asian media outlets, and hate crimes aren't abnormal. It's just that it doesn't get mainstream media attention. I believe as a percentage of the respective group, Jewish people are the largest targets of hate crimes. By nominal figures, it is African American/Black. But this year, it will likely be Asians due to COVID. But the lesser value put on Jewish and Asian people who fall victim to hate crimes by the mainstream media and even population is why I'm considering voting Republican, as the race narrative from the Democrats is insulting and generalized.

I feel ya.

The "progressives" have become distorted so much during the last 20 years such that apparently it's not racist to discriminate against influential and "successful" minority groups.

Although I'm more of a pragmatist who'd vote for a good candidate regardless of the party, I'd probably end up voting Republican most of the times (except for this presidential election, but will likely vote Republican for the Senate and local elections. Also thank God that most of northeastern Republicans haven't sold their souls and are sticking to their pragmatic "Rockefeller" Republican approach.)

But I just wanted to point out that it's really only the small yet most vocal part of the Democratic party that's shouting out hypocritical bigotry about racism (you know when it's only racist to discriminate black and Hispanic people, and everyone else deserves because they are pRivIlEgEd).
