Surgery During Summer Internship

Hello everyone,

TL; DR: have a minimal invasive surgery & only need 3 days off to recover. Internship is Remote.

PE internship for the summer. Firm is super nice & have said I won’t be on Zoom 9-5, rather it’d be put in into some firm meetings & do projects along that won’t require much Zoom. My doctor said I need surgery ASAP. My surgery isn’t until late June. My doctor pre appt is on a Friday, surgery on Monday & I have to stay at the hospital until Tuesday. So based on that I only need 3 days. Plus the doctor said recovery is quick (surgery is minimal invasive ~ 1 night mandatory to stay at the hospital)

I can definitely do my intern remote work while recovering, just don’t know how to ask for permission to miss Friday, Monday & Tuesday.

Any advice would be great !

Look, you have to prioritize your health! This is coming from someone sitting in a bed recovering from surgery that I should have gotten 2 years ago but I was also working my summer internship and kept putting it off. I am now second year analyst and finally gave into the surgery simply because it had gotten so bad that I couldn't keep putting it off and it became something bigger than it should've been.

You can definitely ask for those days off and they'll understand. I know it's difficult and uncomfortable but if you aren't going to take care of yourself then no one else will.

I agree, it does feel a bit uncomfortable to ask. I just don't want to seem "weak" or "uninterested." I think I'll probably offer to take more projects. Thank you for your advice !!

Pretty straightforward - if they wont let you off those days then they’re probably assholes and your life there will be hell. Plenty of firms and jobs to go around, really dumb to take one where they don’t care about your health at all. Have a pretty firm stance on this kind of stuff and it’s embarrassing the amount of people who bend over for mds

thank you for your advice! I’ll be emailing my supervisor & ask to hop on a call and then explain that I’ll need those days off. I just didn’t want to give off a bad impression since this is my first internship /:
