Switching Sectors early on
I am currently in ER (4-6 months in current sector). I really like the nature of the work, but I don't enjoy my sector at all and doesn't help that it is also incredibly out of favor. How long do I have to wait until looking for other opportunities, and what is the best way of going about this without my analyst knowing (research dept. on smaller side so would look elsewhere)
Hi IPAs and IPOs, whoops, looks like nobody chimed in here.... maybe one of these discussions below is relevant:
Fingers crossed that one of those helps you.

Hey,
Do you mind divulging what you ended up doing & how you ended up doing it? Thanks
I ended up staying, not to give away to much about the situation, but we shifted coverage focus into some very in favor sub-verticals related to our coverage. I recruited at multiple BB/EBs including ones in similar coverage (unspoken rule to not out an associate for recruiting to their analyst) and had no issues getting looks/offers. Ended up deciding sell-side is not for me, and as I have been able to get buyside looks from my current role made sense to stay instead of moving SS firms to get more BS looks. Bank brand matters far less than in IB for HF/LO who will quickly figure out if you are competent or not
Sounds like energy and maybe focusing more on ESG/Energy Tech/Energy transition?
Thanks for the response. What didn't you like about the sell-side?
I started looking to switch at the 1.5 year mark
Hey Paulie,
Hope you're well. If you don't mind, what made you want to switch? Did you go into the role knowing that it probably wasn't for you and bided your time or did the realization come after? How did you go about switching? Thanks
I went into the role knowing I wanted to switch. I broke in from another area within finance, so wasn't selective on sectors initially, was more focused on just getting in and getting a spot. The sector I initially broke into was interesting at first, but it was a niche sector, and I became bored after about a year. In terms of my approach for switching, I would just email the senior analyst for a corresponding opening on LinkedIn and express my interest. This got me into an interview process ~50% of the time. I was also super selective on the openings and only focused on sectors I wanted to be in (TMT and consumer disc). It took me about 5 months to switch cause of this. Also was in multiple processes where I was basically runner up and lost to someone who had previous experience in those sectors. If you're moving from something like industrials or consumer, I think you may have better luck. Hope this helps
