Symbols / abbreviations for taking notes

I'm sitting here on a Friday afternoon, trying to make the best of the mountain of compliance training I've put off until the last minute, and I found myself wondering how others take notes (that's how bored I am).

I am often taking notes during internal meetings, client and prospect meetings, and mindless training. Over the years I've developed some symbols and abbreviations to speed up my notes so I can spend less time writing and more time listening. A good portion of my background is in science and technical fields so some of the symbols are borrowed from there.

Anyone here have any tried and true note taking techniques that have helped them? I'm not talking about shorthand or speedwriting because, frankly who the hell wants to write in hieroglyphics? Also, not shown are the obvious abbreviations like FYE for fiscal year end.
