Teach for America vs. Business School

I've recently received an offer and accepted from a BB i-bank in NY; however, at the same time, I've been getting recruited by Teach for America. My plan is to work my two years, if I still enjoy continue with it for who knows how long, but if not, go to either business school or do Teach for America.

Would you guys recommend pursuing Teach for America after working for 2-3 years, just forget about it and go to business school, or do all three? Any thoughts would be appreciated.

it's too early to make the choice now. why would you even need to make that choice now anyhow?

your question is too personal for us to answer for you anyhow. it's like asking us if you should chose vanilla or chocolate ice cream.

article few years back said gs and google lose the most people not to law school or another firm but to TFA.

i'm gonna call BS on that one... i'm sure TFA is a great program, but the majority of people getting GS or google offers aren't applying to TFA.

why does gs and google let kids push their start date back 2 years to fulfill their TFA 2 years? cause they were losing too many kids to it. It was a fortune special on education about 2 years ago. they also focused on MLT which is another program started by a Harvard MBA

Yes, It does look great for bs, but if your only reason for doing it is for that then I wouldn't do it. I have 3 buddies doing it now, and 2 of them love it, but they are also really passionate about it and love teaching. The other did it for the same reason... that it looks good for grad school....but it wasn't enough motivation to get him through it and he was miserable for 1 year and eventually quit. Your BB experience should get you into a good school anyway, but if you think that after your BB experience you will have a passion to teach then go for it, otherwise I would say just go to BS.

just to give everyone a better idea they send you to schools that regular teachers dont want to be at. for instance, last year my friend was on a campus that had a drug bust on the first day of school with over 40k worth of blow , a shooting from a gang that came on campus, a senior pimping out girls for 3 bucks a BJ, and a few teachers that got into fights with teachers.

while this is not the norm this is a typical inner city school.

Why would you want to waste 2-3 years making $40 K in the TFA program ?

'cause his mama call him clay...

TFA and IB seem like very divergent interests...im sure there are plenty of selfless bankers out there who want to save the world (but I bet most of them work in France). TFA is a very noble pursuit and im sure its a great character builder but im with SAC on this one.

Im generalizing but i would guess that most banker types would be absolutely miserable doing 2-3 years of TFA while most TFA types would hate banking

Don't do it just for MBA. TFA is an extremely grueling experience and after a 2-year analyst stint that's also going to crush you, you may change your mind about what you want to do. But if you've always wanted to be a teacher why would you only do it if it helped you get in to grad school? The lack of money v. IB?

any updates on this conversation? i'm a TFA corps member now interested in bschool. i'm interning for an edtech start up and will probably continue right after TFA before applying to bschool. any chance for HBS?
